- Isoform 1: Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Lateral, apical, and basal cell membranes; cell junctions (adherens junctions); canalicular domain of hepatocyte plasma membranes. Found as monomer, dimer, and oligomer forms in plasma membrane.
- Isoforms 2–4: Secreted.
- Isoforms 5–8: Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein.
Background
This gene encodes a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Two subgroups — the CEA cell adhesion molecules and the pregnancy-specific glycoproteins — are located within a 1.2 Mb cluster on chromosome 19. Eleven pseudogenes of the CEA cell adhesion molecule subgroup are also found in this cluster.
Originally identified in bile ducts as biliary glycoprotein, the encoded protein functions as a cell-cell adhesion molecule expressed on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia. It mediates adhesion via both homophilic and heterophilic interactions and is involved in tissue differentiation and organization.
