Target Information

This gene encodes a transmembrane receptor known as DC-SIGN, expressed on dendritic cells and macrophages. It plays a key role in the innate immune system by recognizing various pathogens including parasites and viruses.
The protein has three domains:

1. N-terminal transmembrane domain
2. Tandem-repeat neck domain
3. C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain

The extracellular region functions as both a pathogen recognition receptor and a cell adhesion receptor by binding carbohydrate ligands. The neck domain enables homo-oligomerization, enhancing multivalent ligand binding.
Variations in the neck domain repeat number affect ligand binding ability. DC-SIGN (GeneID 30835) is closely related to L-SIGN (GeneID 10332), differing in ligand-binding properties and tissue distribution.
Alternative splicing produces multiple variants.
