Target Information
The IL21R gene encodes a cytokine receptor for interleukin 21 (IL21). It belongs to the type I cytokine receptor family and forms a heterodimeric receptor complex with the common gamma-chain, which is shared by IL2 and IL5 receptors. This receptor mediates IL21-induced growth-promoting signals and plays a key role in the proliferation and differentiation of T cells, B cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. Ligand binding activates downstream signaling molecules including JAK1, JAK3, STAT1, and STAT3. Mouse knockout studies suggest a role in regulating immunoglobulin production. Three alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been described.
