Target Information
Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) causes chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation. AIF localizes in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus upon induction of apoptosis, facilitating release of apoptogenic proteins such as cytochrome c and caspase-9.
AIF is highly conserved between human and mouse and widely expressed. Mutations in the AIF gene cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, resulting in severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, and a related pseudogene is identified on chromosome 10.
