Target Information

ATG4C is involved in autophagy, the process by which endogenous proteins and damaged organelles are degraded intracellularly. Autophagy is essential for cell homeostasis and remodeling during differentiation, metamorphosis, non-apoptotic cell death, and aging. Reduced autophagy levels have been observed in some malignant tumors, suggesting a role in controlling unregulated cell growth linked to cancer.
This gene encodes a member of the autophagin protein family and the C-54 cysteine protease family. Alternate splice variants encoding the same protein have been characterized.
ATG4C cleaves the C-terminal part of MAP1LC3, GABARAPL2, or GABARAP, liberating form I, which is subsequently converted to form II (PE-conjugated form) capable of binding autophagosomes.
Highly expressed in skeletal muscle, heart, liver, and testis.
