Calmodulin mediates the control of numerous enzymes, ion channels, aquaporins, and other proteins through Ca²⁺ regulation. The calmodulin-Ca²⁺ complex stimulates various protein kinases and phosphatases. Together with CCP110 and centrin, it participates in the centrosome cycle and cytokinesis regulation.

Calmodulin is a small, highly conserved calcium-binding protein found in all eukaryotic cells. It binds up to four calcium ions and acts as an intracellular receptor for calcium signals, undergoing conformational changes that enhance affinity for target proteins.

This 17 kDa protein functions directly by interacting with target enzymes and indirectly via specific kinases. It regulates processes including metabolism, motility, exocytosis, cytoskeletal assembly, and intracellular modulation of cAMP and calcium levels.

Calmodulin contains 149 amino acids and four calcium-binding domains, playing roles in cell growth, cycle control, signal transduction, and neurotransmitter synthesis and release.
