Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and play an important role in intracellular fatty acid utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing a specific pattern of tissue expression. Due to their small size, FABPs rapidly leak from damaged cells, increasing serum levels. Liver FABP is a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo.
Histologically, damaged tissues show low FABP presence, aiding identification of such areas. Liver FABP is also used as a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in vitro and for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
