Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to subfamily 7 in the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene family. These enzymes play a major role in detoxifying aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation. This member has homology to the 26g pea turgor protein and is involved in lysine catabolism in the mitochondrial matrix. It is found in both the cytosol and mitochondria due to alternative translation initiation sites. Additional isoforms have been identified, and mutations in this gene are associated with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Several related pseudogenes have also been reported.
