Target Information
PGP9.5 (Protein Gene Product 9.5, UCH-L1, PARK5) is a neuron-specific protein, structurally and immunologically distinct from neuron-specific enolase. It has a molecular weight of 27 kDa and is part of the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase family (peptidase family C12) with a ubiquitin hydrolase domain.
PGP9.5 exhibits both ubiquitin hydrolase and ligase activities, hydrolyzing small C-terminal adducts of ubiquitin to generate monomers. It is expressed in neurons and nerve fibers throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, neuroendocrine cells, renal tubules, spermatogonia, Leydig cells, ova, and corpus luteum cells.
Overexpression of PGP9.5 is associated with non-small cell lung cancer, while decreased expression is linked to Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Due to its presence in neuronal inclusions, PGP9.5 serves as a valuable neuronal marker and is used in studies of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
