Target Information

Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides and multisubunit proteins. Calnexin interacts with MHC class I heavy chains, partial complexes of the T cell receptor, and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with fully assembled receptor complexes. It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins in the ER.

Soluble ER resident proteins often contain the Lys-Asp-Glu-Leu (KDEL) sequence for ER retention, while integral membrane proteins like calnexin lack this sequence but possess positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring retention. Calnexin consists of a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
