Target Information
Porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD), also known as hydroxymethylbilane synthase (HMBS), is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in the heme biosynthesis pathway.
Deficiency of PBGD leads to acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by neurological dysfunctions, hypertension, tachycardia, abdominal pain, and elevated urinary levels of aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen.
