Target Information

The SGOL1 gene encodes a member of the shugoshin family of proteins, which protect centromeric cohesin from cleavage during mitotic prophase by preventing phosphorylation of a cohesin subunit. Reduced expression of SGOL1 leads to premature centromeric cohesion loss, mis-segregation of sister chromatids, and mitotic arrest.
This protein also protects a subset of cohesin along chromosome arms during mitotic prophase. An isoform lacking exon 6 plays a role in centriole cohesion.
Mutations in SGOL1 are linked to Chronic Atrial and Intestinal Dysrhythmia (CAID) syndrome, characterized by Sick Sinus Syndrome (SSS) and Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-obstruction (CIPO).
Fibroblast cells from CAID patients show increased proliferation and higher senescence rates. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 1 and 7, and alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants.
