Target Information

Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) are transcription factors belonging to the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper family of DNA-binding proteins.
Three isoforms have been identified in mammalian tissues (SREBP-1a, SREBP-1c, and SREBP-2), differing in structure, regulation, and function.
SREBPs exist as 120 kDa inactive precursors in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Upon activation, they translocate to the Golgi, undergo proteolytic cleavage, and yield a mature transcriptionally active 60–78 kDa fragment.
In liver and adipose tissues, SREBPs regulate lipid and cholesterol accumulation by inducing transcription of related genes.
SREBP-1 mainly controls triglyceride synthesis, while SREBP-2 is associated with cholesterol synthesis and accumulation.
