Target Information
Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)-mediated cytotoxicity is a critical component of immune surveillance against virus-infected or transformed cells. Two mechanisms contribute to this activity: the perforin-based process and a FAS-based mechanism involving the transducing molecule FAS (APO-1) and its ligand (FAS-L).
The human FAS (APO-1) protein is a 48 kDa cell surface glycoprotein belonging to a receptor family that includes CD40, nerve growth factor receptors, and tumor necrosis factor receptors. FAS antigen is broadly expressed in lymphoid cell lines and highly expressed in T cells following TCR crosslinking.
A previously undescribed protein, TDAG51, restores activation-induced apoptosis in cells lacking Fas response capability.
