HAAO (3-Hydroxyanthranilate 3,4-dioxygenase)는 non-heme ferrous iron을 포함한 단량체 세포질 단백질로, tryptophan 대사에 관여합니다. 간과 신장 등 말초 기관에 널리 분포하며 중추신경계에서는 낮은 수준으로 존재합니다. 이 효소는 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid로부터 quinolinic acid (QUIN)을 합성하며, QUIN은 NMDA 수용체를 활성화하여 흥분성 독성을 유발합니다. QUIN의 증가된 뇌 내 수준은 신경학적 및 염증성 질환의 병태생리에 관여할 수 있으며, HAAO는 난소암 탐지용 바이오마커 후보로 제시된 바 있습니다.
