Target Information
Inhibin alpha subunit combines with either beta A or beta B subunit to form a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor. Inhibin negatively regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation and exhibits tumor-suppressor activity. Serum inhibin levels correlate with granulosa-cell tumor size, serving as a marker for primary and recurrent disease. Expression of the inhibin alpha-subunit gene is suppressed in poorly differentiated prostate cancer cells. Because expression varies across gonadal and extragonadal tissues, inhibin may function as both a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone.
