Target Information
Inhibin alpha subunit combines with beta A or beta B subunits to form an inhibitor of pituitary FSH secretion. It negatively regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation and exhibits tumor-suppressor activity. Serum inhibin levels correlate with granulosa-cell tumor size and serve as a marker for primary and recurrent disease. In prostate cancer, inhibin alpha-subunit expression is suppressed and undetectable in poorly differentiated cells. Expression varies by tissue, suggesting inhibin functions as both a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone.
