Target Information

The low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene family encodes cell surface proteins responsible for receptor-mediated endocytosis of specific ligands. LDL binds to the cell membrane and is internalized into lysosomes, where the protein is degraded and cholesterol becomes available for feedback regulation of HMG CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. Mutations in the LDLR gene cause familial hypercholesterolemia. LDLR, along with SCARB1, CLDN1, and CD81, is also implicated as an entry factor for Hepatitis C virus. At least three isoforms of LDLR are known.
