Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is localized in the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus and is also secreted. Reducing expression of this gene increases susceptibility to ER stress-induced death and promotes cell proliferation. Initially thought to contain a longer N-terminus with an arginine-rich region, later transcriptional evidence indicates a smaller open reading frame lacking this tract. Polymorphisms in the arginine-rich region, including a mutation changing codon 50 from ATG to AGG, have been reported in various solid tumors but were later found in normal tissues, indicating they are not tumor-related.
