Target Information
Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in various phosphorylated forms up to approximately 82 kDa. It plays a crucial role in regulating localization and function of tight junctions. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, enhancing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability. Expression levels vary by tissue: high and continuous in brain tissue, lower and discontinuous in non-neural tissues. Structural features are highly conserved across species. Under-expression contributes to increased permeability in tumor endothelial tight junctions, leading to brain tumor edema.
