Target Information
PBGD (porphobilinogen deaminase), also known as hydroxymethylbilane synthase (HMBS), is a cytoplasmic enzyme in the heme synthesis pathway. Deficiency in PBGD leads to acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by acute neurological attacks, hypertension, tachycardia, peripheral neuropathy, abdominal pain, and elevated urinary aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen.
