Target Information
This gene belongs to the neuregulin gene family, which encodes ligands for the transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptors ERBB3 and ERBB4—members of the epidermal growth factor receptor family. Ligand binding activates intracellular signaling cascades and induces cellular responses including proliferation, migration, differentiation, and survival or apoptosis.
The NRG3 gene encodes neuregulin 3, which activates tyrosine phosphorylation of ERBB4 and influences neuroblast proliferation, migration, and differentiation via ERBB4 signaling. NRG3 also promotes mammary differentiation during embryogenesis. Genetic studies suggest that NRG3 is a susceptibility locus for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms, though some remain biologically unverified.
