Target Information
The protein encoded by the S100A13 gene belongs to the S100 family, characterized by two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. These proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of various cell types and play roles in regulating cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation.
S100 genes form a cluster on chromosome 1q21, comprising at least 13 members. S100A13 is widely expressed, with particularly high levels in the thyroid gland. In smooth muscle cells, it co-expresses with other S100 family proteins in the nucleus and stress fibers, suggesting roles in signal transduction. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
