The SHANK2 gene encodes a protein belonging to the Shank family of synaptic scaffold proteins located in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses.
Shank proteins possess multiple domains for protein–protein interactions, including ankyrin repeats, SH3 domain, PDZ domain, and a sterile alpha motif.
Alternative splicing regulates molecular structure and interaction profiles of Shank proteins in the brain.
Mutations or alterations in SHANK2 may be associated with susceptibility to autism spectrum disorder.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
