Target Information
The protein encoded by the ABCC8 gene is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport a variety of molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies.
This protein belongs to the MRP subfamily, involved in multidrug resistance, and functions as a modulator of ATP-sensitive potassium channels and insulin release.
Mutations in ABCC8 are associated with hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus type II.
Alternative splicing variants have been observed but are not fully characterized.
