Target Information
Sulfonylurea receptors (SUR) are membrane proteins that serve as molecular targets for sulfonylurea class anti-diabetic drugs, which promote insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. SUR proteins are subunits of inward-rectifier potassium ion channels Kir6.x (6.1 and 6.2). The association of four Kir6.x and four SUR subunits forms the KATP channel, responsible for ion conduction. The sulfonylurea receptor senses intracellular ATP and ADP levels and regulates the opening or closing of the Kir6.x potassium channel, thereby monitoring cellular energy balance.
