Target Information
The protein encoded by the ABCC8 gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies.
This protein is part of the MRP subfamily, involved in multi-drug resistance, and functions as a modulator of ATP-sensitive potassium channels and insulin release.
Mutations and deficiencies are associated with hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy and type II diabetes mellitus.
Alternative splicing has been observed, but transcript variants are not fully described.
