Target Information
Mesothelin was originally identified as a differentiation antigen of mesotheliomas, ovarian cystadenocarcinomas, and pancreatic adenocarcinomas. It is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored, cell-surface glycoprotein predominantly secreted by mesothelial cells.
While normally expressed at restricted levels in pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal membranes, aberrant expression is observed in various cancers including endometrioid uterine adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus, stomach, lung, and cervix.
Proteolytic cleavage of Mesothelin produces a soluble fragment called megakaryocyte potentiating factor (MPF), which stimulates megakaryocyte colony formation and may regulate platelet production.
Both Mesothelin and MPF are implicated in tumorigenesis, promoting tumor cell proliferation, migration, anchorage-independent growth, and metastatic progression.
