Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays crucial roles in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK has been shown to influence cell cycle regulation. c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development.
The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, while deregulated expression induces apoptosis in different cell types. Antibodies against c-myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene is observed in several human tumors including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci (chromosome 14, 2, or 22) is associated with Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative diseases. Aberrant expression of c-myc occurs in tumors of various origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
