Background
This gene encodes the vasopressin receptor type 2 (V2 receptor), a seven-transmembrane-domain G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that couples to Gs, stimulating adenylate cyclase. The V2 receptor subfamily, including V1a, V1b, and oxytocin receptors, is evolutionarily conserved and binds cyclic nonapeptide hormones. V2 receptor is expressed mainly in the distal convoluted tubule and collecting ducts of the kidney, responding to arginine vasopressin (AVP) to regulate urine concentration and water homeostasis. Loss of function causes Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus.
