Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the chaperonin family. The encoded mitochondrial protein may function as a signaling molecule in the innate immune system. It is essential for folding and assembly of newly imported mitochondrial proteins. The gene region functions as a bidirectional promoter with a related family member. Several pseudogenes are associated, and two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified. Mutations are linked to autosomal recessive spastic paraplegia 13.
