Cellular Localization Cytoplasm, Nucleus, Cell membrane (Peripheral membrane protein), Perikaryon, Lamellipodium, Growth cone, Synapse (postsynaptic density). Under neurotoxic stress, CDK5R (p35) is cleaved by calpain to generate CDK5R1 (p25), leading to subcellular misallocation and hyperactivation. Colocalizes with CTNND2 in neuronal cell bodies and with CTNNB1 in cell-cell contacts and plasma membrane of neuroblastoma cells.
Background Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a proline-directed serine/threonine kinase that differs from other CDKs in that it does not directly regulate the cell cycle. It is highly expressed in postmitotic neurons and plays roles in synaptic plasticity, neuronal migration, cytoskeletal organization, endocytosis, exocytosis, and apoptosis. Mutations in this gene are associated with autosomal recessive lissencephaly-7. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, May 2015)
