Background
Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a proline-directed serine/threonine kinase belonging to the cyclin-dependent kinase family. Unlike other CDKs, CDK5 does not directly regulate the cell cycle but plays roles in neuronal functions such as synaptic plasticity and neuronal migration. It phosphorylates proteins involved in cytoskeletal organization, endocytosis, exocytosis, and apoptosis. Mutations leading to loss of CDK5 expression are associated with autosomal recessive lissencephaly-7. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, May 2015)
