Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of neutrophil secondary granules. LF plays roles in iron homeostasis, microbial defense, anti-inflammatory responses, cellular growth regulation, and cancer protection. LTF acts as a first-line defense against microbial infections by binding and removing Fe³⁺ and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified, and receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
