Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and within neutrophil granules. LF plays key roles in:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
LTF functions as a first-line defense by binding and removing Fe³⁺ from the environment and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified, and LTF receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, immune cells, platelets, and some bacteria.
