Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein consisting of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of neutrophil secondary granules. LF plays roles in iron homeostasis, antimicrobial defense, anti-inflammatory response, cell growth regulation, and cancer protection. It binds Fe³⁺ efficiently, depriving microbes of iron, and also exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (α, β, γ) and multiple receptor types are expressed in various tissues and cells.
