Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of secondary granules in neutrophils. Lactoferrin exhibits diverse biological functions, including:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
LTF acts as a first line of defense by binding and removing Fe³⁺ from the environment and also possesses bactericidal and proteolytic activity. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified, and receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and certain bacteria.
