Target Information

FMR1 binds RNA and is associated with polysomes. It may be involved in mRNA trafficking from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. A trinucleotide repeat expansion (from normal 6–53 copies to 55–230 repeats) in the 5′ UTR causes fragile X syndrome. Expansion may also lead to premature ovarian failure. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different protein isoforms with distinct cellular localizations have been described.
