Target Information

Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process mediated by nuclear pore complexes. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal (NLS) require importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins) for nuclear import. Importin alpha binds NLS-containing cargo, while importin beta docks the complex at the nuclear pore. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates through the pore, after which importin alpha and beta dissociate. Importin alpha enters the nucleoplasm with cargo, and importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and nucleoporin FG repeats are essential for this process. The encoded protein belongs to the importin beta family.
