Target Information
Leukocytes adhere to the blood vessel endothelium during extravasation in postcapillary venules of lymph nodes. Leukocyte adhesion also occurs in capillaries and small venules after onset of inflammation, involving a cascade of adhesion receptors. At the endothelial surface, members of the selectin and immunoglobulin superfamilies participate in this process.
E-selectin (CD62E) is an endothelial cell-specific selectin expressed only after activation with proinflammatory cytokines. IL-1, TNFα, and bacterial wall components such as lipopolysaccharides induce E-selectin transcription through an NFκB-dependent signaling cascade. E-selectin is associated with blood vessel endothelium in diverse inflammatory situations.
