Target Information
SERT (Serotonin Transporter) is an integral membrane protein responsible for transporting serotonin from synaptic spaces into presynaptic neurons. This process terminates serotonin activity and recycles it in a sodium-dependent manner.
SERT is a known target for psychomotor stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine and belongs to the sodium:neurotransmitter symporter family.
Promoter polymorphisms of this gene have been linked to variations in serotonin uptake rate and may be associated with sudden infant death syndrome, aggressive behavior in Alzheimer’s disease, and depression susceptibility under emotional stress.
