Target Information
CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit contains 206 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 24 kDa. CRP is produced by the liver, and plasma levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays an important role in innate immunity and nonspecific host resistance. CRP levels can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
