Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) exhibits a high degree of tissue specificity, predominantly expressed in all types of muscle cells (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle). Its expression is regulated in a stage- and tissue-specific manner, being induced during terminal muscle cell differentiation.
In skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, desmin is localized in the Z-disk region and at the intercalated disk. Expression in smooth muscle is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin has been observed in muscle-derived tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas. During myocardial dysfunction, dramatic changes in desmin distribution have been reported.
