Target Information
Voltage-gated potassium (K⁺) channels in the plasma membrane regulate repolarization and action potential frequency in excitable cells such as neurons and muscles.
KCNQ1, in complex with KCNE1, is mainly expressed in the heart and cochlea and mediates the slow, depolarization-activated potassium current.
Mutations in KCNQ1 and KCNE1 genes cause cardiac disorders due to impaired electrical signaling, while KCNQ4 mutations are linked to deafness.
KCNQ family members (e.g., KCNQ1, KCNQ4) contain six transmembrane domains and form tetrameric channels. KCNQ4 can form heteromeric channels with KCNQ3 and is expressed in multiple tissues, including cochlear outer hair cells.
