Target Information

SUMO1 (Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier 1) is a ubiquitin-like protein that can be covalently attached to target proteins as a monomer or polymer. This modification requires activation by the E1 complex (SAE1-SAE2), conjugation via the E2 enzyme (UBE2I), and may be promoted by E3 ligases such as PIAS1-4, RANBP2, or CBX4.
SUMOylation plays crucial roles in nuclear transport, DNA replication and repair, mitosis, and signal transduction. SUMO1 is involved in targeting RANGAP1 to the nuclear pore complex protein RANBP2. Polymeric SUMO1 chains can undergo polyubiquitination, signaling proteasomal degradation. Additionally, SUMO1 may regulate genes involved in palate development, and mutations can cause non-syndromic orofacial cleft 10.
