Target Information
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by addition of the telomere repeat TTAGGG. The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity (encoded by TERT) and an RNA component serving as a template for telomere repeat synthesis.
Telomerase expression is typically repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Dysregulation may contribute to oncogenesis. In mouse models, telomerase also aids chromosomal repair by synthesizing telomere repeats at double-stranded breaks.
Alternative splicing of TERT produces multiple isoforms, some of which are incompletely characterized, and may contribute to regulation of telomerase activity.
