Target Information
CCL4 (macrophage inflammatory protein 1-beta, MIP1B) belongs to the intercrine beta (chemokine CC) family. It plays a role in chemotactic and proinflammatory responses as well as immune homeostasis.
Produced by macrophages upon stimulation by bacterial endotoxins, CCL4 recruits and activates inflammatory cells at infection sites. It is expressed in lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.
Both CCL4 and its related protein CCL3 regulate immune cell trafficking and activation in response to bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections. While both affect monocytes similarly, CCL4 selectively attracts CD4+ lymphocytes and CCL3 attracts CD8+ lymphocytes. They are also potent chemoattractants for B cells, eosinophils, and dendritic cells.
Processed CCL4 can down-regulate CCR5 receptor expression, inhibiting CCR5-mediated HIV-1 entry into T cells. CCL4 binds with high affinity to CCR5 receptors.
