Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified. Most CKs are classified as either type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and typically pairs with keratin 5. It is a marker that distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas. Additionally, it serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
