Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs can be identified, generally classified as type I (acidic) or type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is widely used in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
