Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are identified. They are classified into two groups:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and forms complexes with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin families are expressed in all epithelial cells.
